Three kinds of prototype, and why the difference matters
Most briefs ask for “a prototype” without saying which sort, and the three are built differently.
A form prototype is about appearance and ergonomics: how it looks, how it sits in the hand, whether the proportions work. Surface quality dominates, so SLA and proper finishing earn their cost here and material strength barely matters.
A fit prototype has to go together with other parts. Dimensional accuracy dominates, tolerances on the mating features matter more than anything else on the model, and a material that creeps or warps will mislead you.
A function prototype has to survive being used: load, heat, wear, repeated assembly. Material properties dominate, which often means an engineering plastic on FDM, or machining the part from the production material rather than printing it at all.
Telling us which of the three you need changes the process, the material and the price. It is the single most useful sentence you can put in an enquiry.
Choosing the material, not just the process
PLA is cheap, rigid and easy to print, and it softens in a hot car, which makes it fine for a desk review and wrong for anything left in a vehicle or outdoors. PETG is tougher and more forgiving. ABS and ASA handle heat and sunlight better, which matters in this climate. Nylon takes wear and flexing that other filaments will not. Resin gives the finest detail and the cleanest surfaces, and is brittle under sustained load.
The usual mistake is to choose the process first and accept whatever material comes with it. It is worth doing in the other order when the prototype has a job to do.
What slows a prototype down
A file with no units. Critical features with no tolerance called out, so we guess and you get a part that does not fit. Geometry that needs support structures across the faces that matter, which costs more to print and much more to clean up. And a brief that does not say what the prototype is for, which means we cannot tell you when a cheaper route would have done the same job.
When to stop prototyping
At some point another revision costs more than a short production run. If you are printing the same geometry repeatedly with only cosmetic changes, or you need more than a handful of identical parts, the conversation should move to low-volume production or to machining in the production material.
